Town: Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Oban, BenderlochOban is the'Gateway to the Isles'. The panoramic views of the mountains, lochs and islands which have captivated artists, authors, composers, and poets for centuries are as significantly spectacular now as they always were. Oban is a wonderful place to spend time with its stunning west coast sunsets and excellent sea food. It also gives easy access to all the nearby islands.Oban is the biggest hub on the west coast of Scotland giving access to all the Inner and Outer Hebrides. The most outstanding feature within Oban is McCaig'€™s Tower, the Colosseum lookalike which stands above the town and features in many postcards. The Tower is 10 minutes hard walk uphill from the centre of the town and provides spectacular views over the town and onto the neighbouring islands. Oban Distillery is well worth the visit too. Nestled right in the heart of the town beneath the steep cliff that overlooks Oban, it is easily recognizable by its tall chimney. Built in 1794, this is one of Scotland'€™s oldest sources of single malt Scotch whisky. Standing close to the shore is also the ruined Dunollie Castle, stronghold of the MacDougall Clan while Dunstaffnage Castle, which has belonged to the Campbells since 1470, is only two miles away. Children will love a visit to the Scottish Sea Life & Marine Sanctuary near to Oban on the shore of Loch Creran. On the way to Dunollie Castle, you will come across the Oban War Memorial and the Lighthouse, at the end of the Esplanade. This site has picnic benches and a grassy area and offers a terrific view of Dunollie Castle, the Isle of Kerrera and the ferries and boats coming in and out of the bay. Oban War & Peace Museum on Corran Esplanade is open every day, including Sunday, from March to November, and has excellent displays depicting Oban over the years and not just during the war.
