Bekal Fort (85 kms from Kannur) – The most well preserved fort in Kerala, located in Kasargod district, is a circular imposing structure of laterite rising 130 ft. above sea level, stands on a 35 acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea. Overbury\\\'s Folly (21 kms from Kannur) – Located on a hill near Thalassery District Court and is adjacent to a park. It slopes down to the rocks below and is named after its builder, E. N. Overbury, a Briton who served as a local judge at Thalassery in the 1870s. St. Angelo\\\'s Fort (2 kms from Kannur) - A symbol of Portuguese colony, Angelo Fort still keeps its grace and elegance. It was erected in 1505 by Don Francisco De Almeida, pioneer among the Portuguese Viceroys in Kerala. The fort faces the Moppila Bay and enchanting natural beauties. Thalassery Fort (21 kms from Kannur) – Constructed in 1708 AD, when the British East India Company established its settlement on the Malabar Coast. The square fort, with its massive walls, secret tunnels to the sea and intricately carved huge doors, is an imposing structure. Art and Folkore Kerala Folklore Academy (6.5 kms from Kannur) – Located at Chirakkal is the head quarters of Kerala Folklore Academy. The academy is formed to promote traditional art forms of Kerala. Malayala Kala Gramam (29 kms from Kannur) – Located at New Mahe, it is a centre for art and ideas which aims at providing youngsters a Kalari (stage) to practise and perform all forms of fine arts. The centre offers part time as well as full time courses in painting, sculpture, music and dance and art pottery. Theyyam - An ancient and popular ritual dance that has an aura of divine splendour generally performed in front of the village shrines. Performance of a particular deity according to its significance and hierarchy in the shrine can be observed from Oct to March at various Kavu (small temples) spread all over the district. Nature and Wildlife Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary (60 Kms from Kannur) - Spread over 55 sq km of undulating forested highlands on the slopes of the Western Ghats. The highest peak here - Katti Betta - rises to a majestic 1145 m above sea level. Covered with tropical and semi evergreen forests, it is home to a vast variety of flora and fauna endemic to the Western Ghats. Herds of deer, elephant, boar, bison, leopards, jungle cats and various types of squirrels are seen here. Dharmadam Island (17 kms from Kannur) – The small 5-acre island covered with coconut palms and dense bushes is a beautiful sight from the beach. It is close to Muzhappilangad beach. During low tide, one can just walk to the island from the beach... Ezhimala (55 kms from Kannur) – A 286 m high promontory extending itself into the Arabian Sea with beautiful beach nearby. A naval academy is located here. Madayi Para (25 kms from Kannur) – It is a beautiful spot of historical and religious importance. There are several ancient temples and mosques in Madayipara. It is a place of great eco-diversity dotted with rare kinds of floral species... Muzhapilangad Drive-in-Beach (15 kms from Kannur) – It is the only drive-in-beach in India. One can drive the entire 4km length of this beautiful beach with shallow waters which is swimmer’s paradise. Parassinkkadavu Snake Park (16 kms from Kannur) – Dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes. There is a large collection of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes... Payyambalam Beach(2 kms from Kannur) – A beautiful and well maintained beach near to Kannur town which is an excellent spot to spend your evenings... Pythal Mala/Vaithal Mala (65 kms from Kannur) – An enchanting hill station that offers 6 kms long trekkers trail. Adventure freaks can trek to this hill station located on the border areas of Kerala and Karnataka. Perched at 4500ft above sea level, trekkers can climb the rocks and to reach the watch tower which overlooks the beautiful valley beneath. Getting to Kannur By air - The nearest airport is Mangalore in Karnataka state. The nearest International Airport is Kozhikode (Calicut). Alternatively, you can go to Kochi International Airport or Thiruvananthapuram airport with direct flights from the Middle East, Singapore, Maldives and Sri Lanka then catch a train or bus to Kannur. You can also go to Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi or any other Indian cities and then take a train or bus to Kannur. By rail - Kannur is well serviced by rail from all major cities in India like Kozhikode, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Coimbatore. By bus -You can also reach Kannur by bus from big South Indian cities like Mangalore, Kochi, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Mumbai and Coimbatore.
